Cyclosporin for a severe case of aspirin-induced asthma.

چکیده
Cyclosporin, an immunosupressive drug, predominantly inhibits T -lymphocyte dependent immune responses by interfering with synthesis of lymphokines. T-lymphocytes are an important source of inflammatory mediators, and some aspects of asthma may be accounted for by alterations in release of cytokines [1]. Cyclosporin was used to treat a 42 yr old woman with asthma. She has been under our treatment since 1975 when diagnosis of aspirin intolerance was established (2, 3) by oral provocation tests. Skin tests to common airborne allergens were negative, serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) was 101 IU·m1·1• Her asthma was of severe type and over the years 1976-1989 she was on chronic corticotherapy at a dose of 20-30 mg·day·1• nature of the present report has to be stressed. We have not observed any side-effects of cyclosporin treatment, possibly because the drug was given at a low-dose. Cyclosporin side-effects are, however, of concern and should be kept in mind in patients with bronchial asthma possibly subjected to cyclosporin treatment in the future.

Background and purpose: Asthma is a widespread chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that may become uncontrollable in severe subtypes, even with radical treatments. The present study attempts to determine the risk factors of the irreversible airway obstruction in severe asthma patients. Materials and methods: The study population were 72 patients with severe asthma, aged 16- 75 year old...
متن کاملExperience of 10 years with Churg-Strauss syndrome: An accompaniment to or a transition from aspirin-induced asthma?
Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare, idiopathic, eosinophilic vasculitis appearing in concurrence with asthma which is often severe. Aspirin-induced asthma is a special clinical syndrome existing in nearly 10 % of adult asthmatics. After leukotriene antagonists had been marketed there has been marked increase in Churg-Strauss syndrome reports among the patients who had been followed up with asthma...
متن کامل[Differences in sense of coherence in difficult and aspirin-induced asthma and it's links with severity of panic and depressive symptoms in subgroups of women and men].
AIM The author examined psychiatrically a group of 106 patients with difficult asthma and 100 patients with aspirin-induced asthma. The special interest of the study were differences in sense of coherence in both groups and it's links with severity of panic and depressive symptoms in subgroups of asthmatic women and men. METHODS 106 consecutive adults with confirmed, physician-diagnosed diffi...
متن کاملClinical response to cyclosporin in chronic severe asthma is associated with reduction in serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor concentrations.
Activated T-lymphocytes play an important role in asthma pathogenesis and release soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), which can be detected in the serum. In a recent randomized, cross-over trial we showed that cyclosporin, an inhibitor of T-lymphocyte activation, improved lung function in patients with chronic severe asthma. To investigate whether changes in serum sIL-2R concentration coul...
متن کاملProtection of leukotriene receptor antagonist against aspirin-induced bronchospasm in asthmatics
PURPOSE Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are used to treat aspirin-intolerant asthma (AIA); however, the protective effects of long-term LTRA administration against aspirin-induced bronchospasm have not been evaluated. OBJECTIVES We investigated the efficacy of a 12-week treatment with a LTRA in protecting against aspirin-induced asthma in AIA patients. METHODS Fifty-two adult patie...
